Course Description:
This course focus on molecular biotechnology currently applied in environmental sciences. Topics include environmental microbial ecology, biotechnology and bioremediation. Emphasis will be on microbial community studies based upon molecular biological methods. By the end of course, students will gain advanced understanding of the principles of some key molecular biology methods applied in environmental science, e.g. polymerase chain reaction (PCR), quantitative PCR, denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), gene clone library etc. Also, the introduction of gene and enzyme engineering will be enclosed.
